Your first month in Ontario, week by week
· 6 min read · Cayro team
A realistic plan for your first four weeks, so the important things get done and you still have time to breathe.
The first month in a new country is full of lines, forms and first times. It helps to have a plan, and to accept that not everything will happen at once.
Week 1: the unlockers
Get a phone number, apply for your SIN and open a bank account. These three unlock almost everything else. If you are eligible for OHIP, book your ServiceOntario visit now, because appointments can take time.
Week 2: get your bearings
Walk your neighbourhood. Find the closest grocery store, pharmacy, library and transit stop. Get a library card. Visit a settlement agency, even just to introduce yourself.
Week 3: paperwork round two
Apply for your health card if you have not yet. Look at longer-term housing. If you have children, contact your local school board about registration.
Week 4: people
Join one thing: a conversation circle, a faith community, a sports drop-in or a volunteer shift. Friendships take time here, and they start with showing up in the same place more than once.
