A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number you need to work in Canada and to access government programs and benefits. It is issued by Service Canada, and it is free.

Who needs a SIN

You need a SIN to work in Canada, open some types of bank accounts, file your taxes and get benefits such as the Canada Child Benefit. Permanent residents, and temporary residents with permission to work, can apply.

Three ways to apply

  • Online through Service Canada. You upload images of your documents and receive your SIN by mail.
  • In person at a Service Canada office. If your documents are in order, you usually get your number in the same visit.
  • By mail, sending certified copies of your documents.

What to bring

  • A primary identity document, such as your Confirmation of Permanent Residence, PR card, or a work or study permit.
  • A secondary document, such as your passport, if your name is different on your documents or if asked.
  • Proof of address, for online applications.

Protecting your SIN

Your SIN is one of the most valuable pieces of information a fraudster can get. Give it only when it is required: to your employer, to your bank for accounts that earn interest, to the Canada Revenue Agency, and to government programs. Landlords, shops and phone companies do not need it.
